Newick is located in the heart of Sussex, 15 minutes north of the historic town of Lewes (which dates back to Saxon times).  The local village shops include general stores, bakery, butcher and chemist. There are three traditional pubs in the village and a tandoori restaurant.  There are supermarkets nearby in Uckfield (Waitrose,Tesco), Haywards Heath (Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, M&S), Lewes (Waitrose, Tesco, Aldi), Crowborough (Waitrose), all of which are able to deliver to the cottage. Newick is about midway between Canterbury and Winchester and local folklore maintains that it was on the ancient pilgrims' way - the signpost in the village reflects this!

Sussex is a county of stunning natural beauty with varied scenery including rolling downlands, deciduous woodland, mixed farmland and spectacular coastal stretches.  As well as fabulous walks straight from the cottage (in May, wonderful carpets of bluebells in the woodlands around), just a 10 minute drive south from Newick takes you to beautiful walks on the South Downs, and 10 minutes north to the heathland aspects of the Ashdown Forest (Winnie the Pooh territory).  The sea front at Brighton is about half an hour away.  Famous nearby landmarks include the Seven Sisters, Firle Beacon and Ditchling Beacon.

There is so much to do in the area, whether visiting the growing number of vineyards (Rathfinny, Ridgeview, Breaky Bottom, Barnsgate Manor and many more), looking at private gardens open under the NGS scheme (Clinton Lodge, Town Place are both stunning private gardens nearby), walking on the Ashdown Forest or cycling/walking along the South Downs Way.

Manor House Cottage provides a convenient base for visiting many National Trust www.nationaltrust.org.uk and other beautiful houses and gardens (Sheffield Park, Borde Hill, Wakehurst Place, Nymans, Batemans). The Bluebell Railway www.bluebell-railway.co.uk, Pooh Corner and the South of England showground at Ardingly are all nearby, also Pippingford Park.  Glyndebourne Opera House www.glyndebourne.com is only about 8 miles away and with the ticket returns system (sometimes you can get tickets literally hours before the performance) guests have been able to see some wonderful opera in the quintessentially English manner!
